Serious impacts can result from an appliance that has been exposed to water due to flood or fire fighting being put back into service. Before attempting to place a piece of equipment back into service, a qualified individual must thoroughly inspect the equipment and replace any damaged components.
This inspection should include, but not be limited to:
- Furnace blower motor, pumps, switches, and controls;
- Flooded forced-air heating ducts and return-duct pans; and
- Filters and insulation inside furnaces, water heaters, boilers, refrigerators and freezers. These should be replaced if they have been wetted.
If the inspection reveals that the appliance is beyond repair or in an unsafe condition:
- The contractor should take the appliance or piece of gas equipment out of service; and
- Notify their local Technical Safety BC gas safety officer immediately.
Contractors, for more information, please review this information bulletin: Emergency – Natural Disaster Protocol For Electrical & Gas Equipment Safety (e.g., Fire, Flood, Earthquake, Landslide).
