If you found a contractor on your own through an online marketplace or referral, it's always a good idea to ask them for their licence information and references. This is especially important if you are looking to hire someone for regulated services such as gas or electrical work. A licensed contractor should know the legal requirements related to regulated work and will have the training and expertise required to do the job safely. They can also obtain the necessary permit(s) on your behalf and make sure the work meets all code requirements. In addition, as of January 1, 2023, all licensed contractors in BC in electrical, gas, elevating devices, boilers, pressure vessels, and refrigeration are required to include their licence number on all digital advertising.
