Top 10 Changes You Need to Know About the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code

The 2024 Canadian Electrical Code will be adopted in BC effective March 4, 2025. The new code includes changes to support electrical workers in the safe installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment and advances safety and innovation in several domains.

To assist you in the adoption of the new code, we have put together a list of the highest impact changes:

  1. 2-100 Marking of equipment: Mandatory marking of equipment indicating maximum load permitted.  

2. 2-306 Shock and arc flash protection: Increased safety measures for personnel performing energized work. 

3. 8-202 Calculated loads for services and feeders: New demand rules for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and electric vehicle energy management systems (EVEMS). 

4. 10-702 Equipotential bonding: Gas metal piping equipotential bonding may be installed through the gas appliance branch circuit. 

5. 12-318 Overhead installations: The distance between support spans should be no more than 10m when the final point of attachment is to a mobile home, relocatable structure, or similar structure. 

6. 24-102, 24-104, 24-106 Health care facilities: Increased safety requirements regarding circuits, bonding of panel boards, and receptacles in basic care areas. 

7. 26-724 Outdoor receptacles: New rules requiring additional receptacles for the outside of dwelling units. 

8. 56-202 Fibre optic cables: Conductive fibre optic cables can be used in the same raceway as other power and communication cables within industrial establishments.  

9. 64-100 Energy storage and renewable energy systems: New requirements for energy storage systems (ESS). 

10. 68-058 and 68-072 Pool, tubs, and spas: Updated requirements for bonding electrical equipment and other conductive infrastructure related to pools, as well as guidelines for determining the location of pool equipment disconnecting means.
