Gas Commissioning Approval FAQs

If your gas installation permit includes appliances that require Commissioning Approval (CA), you may have questions about when approvals are required, how invoices are generated, and why final inspection may still be unavailable. The following answers address some of the most common questions.

Do I Need Multiple Commissioning Approvals?

Each appliance that requires Commissioning Approval must have its own CA request. If a permit includes multiple appliances that are subject to Commissioning Approval requirements, a separate CA request must be submitted for each qualifying appliance.

How do Appliance Quantities Affect Commissioning Approvals and Invoices?

Whether a Commissioning Approval is required depends on the appliance type and characteristics. Refer to the Commissioning Approval Information Bulletin or the regulation requirements described below for details.

In this example:

• Two 100,000 BTU water heaters do not require Commissioning Approval.
• One 200,000 BTU direct-fired makeup air unit requires one CA submission and generates one invoice.
• Two 600,000 BTU boilers require one Commissioning Approval submission, but separate invoices are generated for each appliance.
• A required Commissioning Approval has not yet been submitted.
• Only some of the qualifying appliances have been included in a Commissioning Approval request.
• Additional appliance types requiring approval are still outstanding.

Why is Final Inspection Still Locked?

Final inspection will not become available until Commissioning Approval requests have been submitted for all qualifying appliances on the permit.

When Will Invoices Appear?

Invoices are generated the day after a Commissioning Approval request is submitted.

This means that you do not need to wait for an invoice to appear before requesting a final inspection. Final inspection becomes available once all required Commissioning Approval requests have been submitted.

What if I Believe My Appliance Does Not Require a CA?

In some cases, additional information about an appliance may be needed to determine whether a Commissioning Approval is required. For example, certain appliances that exceed the BTU threshold may not meet all of the criteria requiring Commissioning Approval.

What Regulations Require Commissioning Approval?

Commissioning Approval requirements are established under the Gas Safety Regulation.

Certain gas appliances must receive Commissioning Approval before being placed into service. Commissioning Approval requests must be submitted at least 48 hours before these appliances are put into operation.
