Sunny weather is enjoyable but sustained daily temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius or higher can result in serious health and safety risks. Extreme heat can affect electrical systems and contribute to pressure vessel failures. If your area is being affected by extreme heat, here are our top three tips to “beat the heat.”
Exercise caution around Pressure Vessels
Pressure vessels, like propane and compressed natural gas tanks hold expandable fluids that can experience high-pressure levels in the heat, leading to uncontrolled release or explosion. Be sure to maintain these by hiring a qualified individual.
Keep your Electrical load in check
Portable air conditioners and other plug-in appliances may overload electrical panels and cause panel failure or a fire. Before plugging in, ask a qualified individual to confirm your electrical panels are the correct size.
Consider the risk of CO
There is a risk of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure and poisoning tied to the use of portable air conditioners. Have a licensed contractor assess the home's air pressure balance and adjust fuel-burning appliance exhaust settings as needed. As a best practice, install a CO detector near fuel-burning appliances and regularly check if it’s working properly.
