If you’re planning to do electrical work in BC, you may need an electrical installation permit before the work begins. Permits help support safe electrical work that meets the requirements of the Safety Standards Act and associated regulations.

Technical Safety BC issues electrical installation permits in most areas of British Columbia. In [certain municipalities](https://www.technicalsafetybc.ca/learn-about/technical-safety-bc/jurisdiction), electrical permits are issued by the municipality instead. Whether you’re a licensed electrical contractor or a homeowner doing work on your own property, it’s important to understand when a permit is required, who is responsible for obtaining it, and what happens after it’s issued. Following these requirements can help you avoid delays and keep your project on track.

To help you navigate the process, here are some answers to the most common questions about electrical installation permits.

#### **What is an electrical installation permit?**

An [electrical installation permit](https://www.technicalsafetybc.ca/technologies/electrical/installation-permits) gives you permission to perform regulated electrical work or operate regulated electrical equipment.

Permits are an important part of the safety system. They help confirm that electrical installations meet regulatory requirements and track the scope of a project. This allows Technical Safety BC safety officers to assess the work through inspections.

#### **How do I apply for an electrical installation permit?**

The application process depends on whether you’re a licensed electrical contractor or a homeowner.

Licensed contractors can apply for an electrical installation permit by using your [Online Services account](https://online-services.technicalsafetybc.ca/) or by calling our [Contact Centre.](https://www.technicalsafetybc.ca/contact/contact-us)

Homeowners must complete and submit their own permit application. You can apply by completing the [online application.](https://online-services.technicalsafetybc.ca/cp-form/FRM1259)

Someone can help you complete the application, but if you’re the homeowner performing the work, you must submit the permit request yourself.

#### **What should I do if work has already started without a permit?**

If regulated work has started without the required permit:

- Stop the regulated work.
- Hire a licensed electrical contractor. The contractor will apply for the appropriate permit before regulated work continues.

Performing regulated work without a permit is a violation of the [Safety Standards Act](https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/00_03039_01) and may result in enforcement action.

If you suspect unsafe or unpermitted work, contact Technical Safety BC at 1 866 566 7233 or submit an [incident, hazard, unlicensed or unpermitted work report](https://online-services.technicalsafetybc.ca/cp-form/incident-reporting-form).

#### **Do I need to request inspections?**

Yes. An inspection must be requested for each required phase of regulated work.

Section 19 of the Electrical Safety Regulation sets out inspection requirements. Inspections are required at the phases identified by the regulation or by a safety officer.

Work shouldn’t proceed to the next stage until the current phase has either been inspected or the inspection has been waived.

#### **How do I request an inspection?**

How you request an inspection depends on whether you’re a licensed contractor or a homeowner.

Licensed contractors can request an inspection through their [Online Services account](https://online-services.technicalsafetybc.ca/).

Homeowners can request an inspection by calling our [Contact Centre](https://www.technicalsafetybc.ca/contact/contact-us)or submitting the online inspection request form ([Form 1011](https://technicalsafetybc.ca/find-a/form/1011)).

#### **What do safety officers look for?**

Safety officers assess electrical installations to determine whether the work complies with the Safety Standards Act, the Electrical Safety Regulation, applicable codes and standards, and any conditions of the permit.

Their role is to identify safety hazards, verify that required inspections or declarations are completed, and determine whether the installation meets regulatory requirements.

#### **How many inspections will I need?**

It depends on the size and type of project and the inspection requirements under Section 19 of the Electrical Safety Regulation.

A single-family home, for example, may require around five inspections. A multi-family building or larger project may require more depending on the scope of work and construction schedule.

#### **What if the work is finished but an inspection wasn’t requested?**

If work is completed without the required inspections, the installation may be considered non-compliant, and additional steps may be needed before the next phase of work can proceed or before the permit can be closed.

This may include de-energizing electrical equipment, exposing rough wiring or underground installations, exposing other regulated work for assessment, arranging an inspection, or providing additional documentation to confirm the work meets applicable safety requirements.

Requesting inspections at the appropriate stages helps avoid delays and makes it easier to close your permit when the project is complete.

#### **Before you start electrical work**

Electrical installation permits are more than an administrative requirement. They’re an important part of helping ensure electrical work is performed safely and meets provincial requirements.

Before starting a project, make sure you know whether a permit is required, who is responsible for obtaining it, and when inspections need to be requested. Taking these steps at the beginning can help prevent delays, unpermitted work, and unnecessary safety risks.
