Whether you’re completely remodeling your kitchen or simply looking to get your appliances serviced, it’s important to find a reputable gas or electrical contractor that you can trust.
While a quick Google search may turn up thousands of results, how do you know who to pick? How can you be sure that the contractor you select has a safety-first mindset? We've put together a list of tips to help you hire the right contractor for projects both large and small.
1) Get Recommendations
If you’re not sure where to start, use our Find a Licensed Contractor tool to search for electrical or gas contractors in your area. This tool includes the contact details of all contractors licensed to perform regulated work in BC. You could also ask the people you trust the most: family, friends, peers and local professionals. It’s likely someone in your network has used a contractor for a similar job and they will likely have an opinion on their experience. This is a great first step to gather valuable information and insight for your own project.
2) Check Their Licensing
If you found a contractor on your own through an online marketplace or referral, it's always a good idea to ask them for their licence information and references. This is especially important if you are looking to hire someone for regulated services such as gas or electrical work. A licensed contractor should know the legal requirements related to regulated work and will have the training and expertise required to do the job safely. They can also obtain the necessary permit(s) on your behalf and make sure the work meets all code requirements. In addition, as of January 1, 2023, all licensed contractors in BC in electrical, gas, elevating devices, boilers, pressure vessels, and refrigeration are required to include their licence number on all digital advertising. So if you’re browsing for gas or electrical contractors online, make sure to look for their TSBC licence number on digital ads. Learn more about regulation changes to contractor advertising.
3) Assess Their Credentials
Once you have the contractor’s licence information, it’s also important to verify their credentials. Our Find a Licensed Contractor tool can also help you with validating your contractor’s licence. If applicable, each contractor profile also includes details on enforcement action(s) taken against the contractor since 2022.
4) Do Your Research
Once you’ve made a shortlist of contractors you’d like to consider, take the time to look into their previous work. Their website or social media channels could provide a good indication of the work they have done before. Don’t be afraid to ask about past projects and read testimonials from clients.
While finding the right person or company might seem like a daunting task, it’s worth putting in the time and effort to find a contractor who is well equipped and qualified for the safety of your home or business.
